The new Mercedes-Benz ML300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE is one of the most capable vehicles in its class. In fact, this prestigious four-wheel drive leviathan is one of the few machines that can compete with the Land Rover Discovery. So, let's fire-up this mighty beast and see what it has to offer.

Vehicles of this nature need to be sophisticated on-road mile munchers and entertaining off-road mud plungers. This is tricky to achieve, but the Mercedes-Benz ML300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE succeeds spectacularly. On tarmac this robustly constructed 4x4 has responsive steering, excellent body control, and the ride is smoother than Casanova's best chat-up line.

Off-road the sophisticated anti-lock braking system enables the front wheels to 'dig in' for extra traction, so it feels secure in slippery conditions. The M-Class can also negotiate 35 degree inclines and up to 500mm of water should it rain – a lot. This likeable lifestyle statement also has a downhill decent system that helps control the vehicle's speed. Very clever too.

Power comes courtesy of the 3.0-litre V6 engine that propels the M300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE to 60mph in 8.3 seconds, and on to 130mph. During acceleration this likeable off-road leviathan feels refined as it effortlessly dances through the seven-speed automatic transmission. This 204hp terrain tamer also averages 32.5mpg and sits in road tax band L/£425.

The M-Class' specification is higher than a kite on a windy day and includes a powered tailgate. This is complemented by the eight speaker radio CD player with MP3 compatibility, automatically dimming rear view mirror, adaptive brake lights, and hill-start assist technology. Options include a handy reversing camera, the key-less go system, and heated front seats.

According to Motoring.co.uk's database, prices for the new Mercedes-Benz ML300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE start at £40,105. Clearly a lot of money, but this inspiring 4x4 is worth the premium.
