The new Mercedes-Benz ML300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE is a highly accomplished four- wheel drive beast that performs beautifully both on tarmac and over the rough stuff. This is partly due to its 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine that produces 200bhp, and propels the 2,185kg M- Class to 62mph in 8.3 seconds. Not bad for a monstrous machine that averages 32.5mpg.

On-road this magnificent 4x4 is comfortable, has accurate steering, good body control, and feels reasonably lively. These characteristics make it pleasurable to drive in a variety of conditions, whether cruising on the motorway or nipping along twisty A roads. Off-road the M- Class makes occasional mud-plungers look like heroes as the electrical wizardry helps with downhill descents and maintaining traction. It can also negotiate 500mm of water should you fancy taking your German companion for a swim.

The new Mercedes-Benz ML300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE oozes sophistication and this is reflected in the high specification. Standard features include metallic paint, alloy wheels, an electronic stability programme, parking sensors, Bluetooth, and man-made leather seats. It also has cruise control and seven-speed automatic transmission, so driving this magnificent beast can be virtually effortless under the right conditions.

So, how do we summarise this capable 4x4? The ML300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE is one of the most prestigious vehicles on the market. More importantly, its fashionable badge is backed-up by genuine on/off road capability. The only potential issue, apart from its rather considerable £41,210 price tag, is its sheer size. At 4,781mm long and 1,911 wide it can be a handful in town, but the compensation is a warehouse-sized cabin and an attention grabbing presence. Well done MB.
