Magnifying glass on standby. The MINI Hatchback First 3dr has a mini price tag. In fact, at £11,810 it is the cheapest car produced by the marque. So, what do you get? First and foremost this machine is tremendously stylish. It has far more presence than the comparably priced Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, for example. Like these competitors the MINI has an extremely composed chassis, pin-sharp steering, and a comfortable ride. It also has a reasonable equipment specification considering its rock-bottom price. Gadgets include: electric windows, power mirrors, MP3 connectivity, split/fold seats, and an electronic stability programme. Options include air-con for £690 and Bluetooth for £845.

The MINI Hatchback First 3dr has a 1.6-litre petrol engine. This 75bhp power plant is teamed with six-speed manual transmission and propels fashion conscious motorists to 62mph in 13.2 seconds. Not fast then, but that gives the neighbours time to admire your gleaming car. Further compensation comes in the form of low running costs, so this entry- level lifestyle statement averages 52.3mpg. This rises to 64.2mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Throw-in the stylish cabin, robust build, and tremendous looks and it becomes clear that the MINI Hatchback is a fantastic car. What a pity there is no magnifying glass holder.
