News flash! The new Mitsubishi ASX Black is not always black. Other exterior colours include: blue, white, silver, grey, and red. Is that allowed? Either way, this special edition Nissan Qashqai rival also has a satin black styling kit to make life more entertaining. This includes the black: 17” alloys, roof, spoiler, mirrors, grille and fog lamp bezels. The interior has a striking black leather finish with carbon fibre inserts. As the Black is based on the ASX4, this fashionable plaything also has: a reversing camera, iPod connection, satellite navigation, and Mitsubishi's Active Stability and Traction Control technology. Very nice too.

The Mitsubishi ASK Black is available with two engines, neither of which are black. Is that allowed? The 1.6-litre 115bhp version hits 62mph in 11.4 seconds and averages a pleasing 47.1mpg. In contrast, the 1.8-litre 147bhp diesel two-wheel-drive trim is both faster and more economical. That hits 62mph in 9.7 seconds and returns 51.4mpg. This engine can be teamed with four-wheel-drive too - but that specification is slightly slower and thirstier than its 2WD sibling. Whichever trim you prefer the ASK Black has composed handling, robust build, and a decent 442-litre boot. I cannot wait for the ASK Bright Pink.
