The new Nissan Pixo 1.0 Visia has a list price of £7,150, which makes this compact city car the most affordable Nissan on the market. This bargain-bucket urban run-around is designed to be easy to drive, so it has light steering and slick manual transmission. This complements the respectable ride quality that makes nipping to the shops surprisingly comfortable.

Now, the Pixo's cost cutting tendencies continue once you take possession. The 1.0-litre 67bhp engine averages 64mpg and has rock bottom emissions of 103g/km, so it sits in road tax band B/£20. As well as being economical the Pixo offers cash conscious owners adequate performance. Sixty-two miles-per-hour approaches in 14 seconds and it is capable of 96mph – perhaps more if you tow it with a Ferrari.

The five-door Nissan Pixo 1.0 Visia may be cheap but it has various handy toys. These include twin air-bags, plus anti-lock brakes and front seatbelt pre-tensioners. It also has power steering, an engine immobiliser, CD player, and folding (although not splitting) rear seats. Motorists also benefit from Nissan's legendary build quality that should ensure the Pixo lasts longer than than a solid lump of granite.

On the downside, a lack of refinement and intrusive road noise at higher speed hints at the Pixo's low price. Another gripe is the tiny 129-litre boot which provides less storage space than a DL envelope. That said, folding the rear seats flat increases this to 367- litres, but access is still slightly awkward due to the Pixo's high rear lip.

Still, never mind. Nothing is perfect and it's wrong to be too critical considering the new Pixo's rock-bottom price. Overall it's a likeable machine and a sensible choice for cost conscious urban motorists.
