Fantastic news! The Nissan Pixo 1.0 Visia has no air-conditioning. I am delighted to report that it also lacks electric windows, power mirrors, and cruise control. Mercifully, this city car has no electric sunroof, either – and thank goodness sat-nav is absent too. This is the perspective a surprising amount of motorists share. Gadgets, some claim, are simply unnecessary toys that increase the price of cars and make them more likely to fail. There is some truth here. There are numerous stories of vast repair bills for simple items such as electric seats. Who needs those? Some old cars are fitted with little more than deck chairs and they get you to the shops. And who needs air-con? Just open the window on hot days.

If this is your view of the world, the Nissan Pixo 1.0 Visia might be the car for you. But why? It is a Nissan, for starters, so it feels robust enough to outlast time. It also has a pleasing 1.0-litre 68PS engine that averages a cash-saving 64.2mpg. It can also be taxed annual for £20 thanks to its low carbon emissions. Furthermore, whereas it lacks 'unnecessary' gadgets, the Pixo has a few basics to make life pleasant. Power steering, an immobiliser, and CD player come as standard. And how about the boot? With the rear seats folded it has a fair capacity of 367-litres. The cost of this no-nonsense workhorse is only £6,995. For that staggeringly low price, I could live with the Pixo if it had three wheels.
