The new Nissan Qashqai 1.5 DCI Visia may be the entry level diesel of the range, but it still offers consumers a generous bang for a modest buck. For £17,395 the Qashqai serves-up enviable reliability, a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, stylish good looks, plus enough space for five lovers of this quirky Japanese machine.

Now, Nissan worked hard to ensure the Qashqai 1.5 DCI Visia handles properly and great news – they succeeded. There is very little body roll to unsettle the smooth ride, despite being rather lofty, and there is plenty of traction. Okay, so this particular variant lacks the four-wheel drive capability of its more expensive siblings, but this is not a vast loss as even 4x4 versions are most at home on tarmac.

The Nissan Qashqai DCI 1.5 Visia's engine only produces 104bhp, so its performance is adequate but leisurely. Zero to sixty takes 11.8 seconds and top speed is 110mph. On the plus side it manages 47.9mpg on the urban cycle, 60.1 on the extra-urban, and a highly respectable average of 55.3mpg. This frugality means its emissions are only 137g/km, so it sits in road tax band E/£110.

Standard specification includes driver, passenger, side, and curtain air-bags plus the electronic stability programme to minimise the chance of needing the aforementioned bags. Music lovers benefit from the four-speaker CD/radio system that is complemented by the MP3 connector and remote audio control. There is also the convenience of four electric windows, power mirrors, air-conditioning, and that strange bluetooth thing.

The Nissan Qashqai 1.5 DCI Visia is a genuinely distinctive vehicle that is capable enough to live-up to the hype. So, if you are looking for reliable no-nonsense transport the new Qashqai is worth serious consideration.
