The new Nissan Qashqai 1.6 Visia may only be the entry-level model, but it offers motorists a tremendous list of benefits for a relatively small pile of cash. For only £15,995 the Qashqai serves-up rock-solid reliability, a reassuring five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, stylish good looks, and enough space for a family of five.

Now, Nissan worked hard to ensure the new Qashqai 1.6 Visia handles properly, and they succeeded spectacularly. Despite being rather lofty, there is very little body roll to unsettle the smooth ride and there is plenty of confidence inspiring traction. Okay, this particular variant lacks the four-wheel drive capability of its more expensive siblings, but this will not be a major issue for most motorists, most of the time.

The new Nissan Qashqai 1.6 Visia's engine produces 115bhp, so this five-speed manual has adequate but leisurely performance. To be precise, zero to sixty-two takes 11.9 seconds and the top speed is 113mph. On the plus side it manages 35.8mpg on the urban cycle, 54.3 on the extra-urban, and a respectable average of 45.6mpg. This fuel frugality means its emissions are only 144g/km, so twelve months road tax costs £125.

Standard specification includes the driver, passenger, side, and curtain air-bags - plus an electronic stability programme to minimise the chance of actually using the aforementioned cushions. Music lovers benefit from a four-speaker CD/radio system, that features MP3 connection and remote audio controls. There is also the convenience of four electric windows, power mirrors, air-conditioning, and that strange Bluetooth thing.

The new Nissan Qashqai 1.6 Visia is a capable machine that lives-up to its marketing hype. It suits motorists who want something affordable and distinctive, but without compromising on practicality and ease of ownership. It is clearly another quality product from this dependable Japanese manufacturer.
