Well, well, well – I like the new Peugeot 508 GT 2.2 HDi. This top-of-the-range saloon is the replacement to the 407 and rivals the ever-popular Ford Mondeo. Let us start with the positives. The 508's styling is elegant and modern, it has a respectable 473-litre boot, and feels reasonably robust. It is also engaging to drive thanks to its sharp steering and responsive chassis - although the ride is noticeably harsher than the rest of the range. The 2.2-litre 204bhp diesel engine propels this mile-muncher to 62mph in 8.2 seconds, which is something to boast about in the company car park. This performance is impressive considering the 508 GT averages 49.6mpg, and returns 64.2mpg on the extra-urban cycle.

The new Peugeot 508 GT 2.2 HDi is beautifully equipped. As such, this six-speed automatic has pleasing features such as Bluetooth and parking sensors - plus a few unexpected extras. These include the head-up system that projects the vehicle's speed onto a retractable display close to the sound-proofed windscreen. This enables motorists to check their velocity without moving their attention too far from the road. Very clever, as is the easy to use key-less entry system. Simply approach the vehicle - it then automatically unlocks – and can be started by pressing a button near the steering wheel.

The Peugeot 508 GT 2.2 HDi is stylish, distinctive, fun to drive, cheap to run, and has more technical highlights than the latest smart phone. Good thing too, it costs £28,750.
