The new Peugeot iOn might represent the future of motoring – it might not. This city car is powered by an electric motor and a big pile of batteries. No petrol or diesel engine, so its emissions are 0g/km. Okay, but here comes the killer point. The iOn's range on a full charge is only 93 miles - and even that may be tricky to achieve. Like a traditional car, the iOn's power usage varies according to the conditions. It takes more juice to climb hills than to cruise on flat tarmac, for example. Equally, loading the car with five people and filling the tiny 168-litre boot increases weight, which requires more energy to shift. Driving style has a considerable influence too. As such, it is tricky to confirm how far the iOn could travel if you bought one for £33,155 – minus the Government's £5,000 Plug-In Car Grant.

The Peugeot iOn can be charged from home via standard 240v sockets. A full charge takes seven hours, so best not be in a hurry. Motorists who live near specialist charging points can fill their batteries to 50% in fifteen minutes – or to 80% in thirty. How long these batteries last before they must be replaced is tricky to ascertain. Electric motor aside, the new Peugeot iOn is a reasonable run-around. It has five-doors, fairly composed handling, and plenty of toys. These include: the electronic stability programme, climate control, four electric windows and power mirrors. On the downside, the car is rather slow as it only produces 64bhp. The race to 62mph takes 15.9 seconds. Perhaps the Fiesta Econetic 1.6 TDCi is a better choice. It is faster, smoother to drive, has a bigger boot, averages 76.3mpg, and is free to tax. It can also be driven beyond 93 miles and only costs £13,895.
