Love it or hate it - the new Range Rover Evoque will soon walk among us. Some motorists 'love' this BMW X3 rival because it has high-class prestige, genuine off-road capability, and a beautifully sculpted cabin. Some 'hate' it because its styling – arguably – makes it resemble a giant child's toy. That said, when it goes on sale in September 2011, this particular Matchbox special will cost a mighty £28,700 to £44,300. Hardly kids' prices.

The Range Rover Evoque will initially be available with three engines. Details are sketchy, but the 2.0-litre 237bhp turbo-petrol unit propels this fashion statement to 62mph in 7.1 seconds. Fast enough to race away and stop your neighbours studying the odd styling of this three and five-door 4x4. Diesel lovers are catered for too, with 2.2-litre 187 and 148bhp units. The latter averages nearly 50mpg. This engine range will expand in 2012.

The Evoque is a sporty little number, hence its coupé-inspired styling. As such this 4x4 handles beautifully and feels totally composed on the black stuff. Its has fantastic ride quality too, particularly the top-of-the-range model that has a continuously adaptive damping system. This works via magnetics/witchcraft. Off-road the Evoque conquers tricky conditions thanks to its magnificent 'terrain response system'. This has specialist modes such as sand and mud. So, the Range Rover Evoque - love it or hate it?
