Finally, this long-awaited estate is here. The new Saab 9-5 Sportwagon Aero 2.8T XWD complements its saloon sibling which has looked rather exposed – and all alone - in a sector that traditionally offers a fair amount of cargo space. So, this large executive status symbol’s capacity is 527-litres plus five passengers, or two people and 1,600-litres of family-focussed essentials. As such there is plenty of room, but some rivals offer more.

The Saab 9-5 Sportwagon Aero 2.8T XWD is the top-of-the-range version of this prestigious load-lugger. As such, this 300ps V6 beast rockets to 62mph in only 7.2 seconds. Best hold on tight then. Top speed is a mighty 152mph. High performance has its downside though, so expect to average only 28mpg. Emissions are high too, so it sits in road tax band L/£445. Ouch! Still, nothing much compared to the £39,195 asking price.

This expensive mile-muncher has a very high specification. Most impressive is its four- wheel-drive system, that ensures there is plenty of traction available for tricky conditions. Think slippery roads and muddy fields though, not hard-core terrain tamer. The 9-5 also has: Bluetooth, leather seats, parking sensors, and MP3 connectivity. Motorists can even specify a rear entertainment system for £1,540. Worth every penny to keep the kids quiet.
