About time too. The new Saab 9-5 Sportwagon is being tweaked, polished, and prepared for its UK launch. It will join its saloon sibling which has looked rather exposed – and all alone - in a sector that traditionally offers a fair amount of storage. So, this large executive estate's capacity is 527-litres plus five passengers, or two people and 1,600-litres of 'I love my Saab' memorabilia. As such there is plenty of space, although some rivals have more.

It is too early to evaluate how the Saab 9-5 Sportwagon handles, but the saloon version feels perfectly accomplished. In most 'non-sporty' forms, it is a machine best driven fairly gently. It is a cruising temple that wafts from A to B – and has little interest in ripping the road to pieces. The estate will probably follow this formula so expect a comfortable, solid, and composed experience. Fine by me, not every car needs to be thrilling on the apexes.

Technical specifications are rather sketchy, but we expect to see a couple of 2.0-litre diesel engines shoehorned under the stylish bonnet. These will produce 158 and 188bhp, and should provide the Saab 9-5 Sportwagon with a reasonable amount of grunt. There should be plenty of gadgets too, perhaps even the head-up display from the saloon version. Sounds like a well-equipped, fairly spacious, and comfortable family workhorse.
