Stop the press. The new Skoda Octavia SE Plus is fantastic value for money. In fact, anyone looking for a practical five-door hatchback may find it ticks all the boxes. Build quality and cabin finish, for example, feel excellent. 'Tick'. Furthermore the handling is safe and predictable, the ride smooth, and there is space for five plus 585-litres of luggage. Fold the rear seats flat and this increases to a healthy 1,455-litres. Tick and tick.

Next on the check-list is the filthy subject of cold hard cash. Prices for the new Skoda Octavia SE Plus start from a temptingly tiny £16,535. The most fuel efficient 1.6-litre diesel version - which costs £18,370 - averages an impressive 60.1mpg. This rises to 67.3mpg on the extra-urban cycle, and even in town this Ford Focus rival manages 50.1mpg. Furthermore, twelve months road tax only costs £95. Another substantial 'tick' then, even though this 105PS version takes a lengthy twelve seconds to reach 62mph.

The 'SE Plus' sits one place below the top-of-the-range Elegance. As such it has plenty of toys for list-loving motorists. These include the multi-functioning steering wheel, four electric windows, MP3 stereo, air-conditioning, and heated door mirrors. Very nice too. Options include rear parking sensors for £300 which, when combined with the standard-fit front sensors, ensure the Octavia is easy to park. Another big 'tick' for Skoda.
