Proceed with caution. The new Skoda Yeti SE Plus is a strange beast. For starters, the word 'yeti' refers to a 'large hairy creature resembling a human or bear living in the Himalayas'. Perhaps this name was chosen because some versions have four-wheel-drive to conquer mountainous terrain. Perhaps it was chosen because the seats are furry, or maybe it was a spelling mistake. Either way, the Yeti is here and demanding attention.

New Skoda Yeti SE Plus prices start at £17,590, but the cheapest 4x4 version costs £20,440. Throughout the range this hairy monster feels properly screwed together and easy to drive. It is practical too, as this five-door hatchback swallows five people plus 416-litres of luggage. If a few passengers vanish into the mountains the rear seats can be folded flat, increasing storage capacity to 1,760-litres. More than the Ford Mondeo Estate.

Now, this mysterious creature likes to hide among the trees but I have confirmed its specification. This includes the satellite navigation system, MP3 compatibility, air-conditioned glove box, and electric front windows. The high-spec SE Plus trim, which sits just below the top-of-the-range version, also has folding tables on the back of the front seats. Perfect for Yeti food, which is mostly raw meat and chocolate spread sandwiches.

The Skoda Yeti SE Plus may be named after a furry-faced creature, but it certainly has its merits. This distinctive machine best suits those who need something practical, but want to stand out from the crowd. It is proof that vehicles can be easy to live with – and tremendously entertaining and stylish. Can hardly wait for the Skoda Lock Ness Monster.
