About time too. The new Suzuki Swift Sport has been revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is the most prestigious version of this likeable supermini and has several advantages over its boxy-looking predecessor. For starters, it is far better looking. This is thanks to its: low-slung posture, large front grill, and finned fog lamp bezels. These characteristics help this little plaything stand out from the crowd and scream 'look at me'.

Good news now. The new Suzuki Swift Sport's 1.6-litre engine has more power and torque than the late model. It knocks-out 134bhp – compared to 123bhp - and has 160Nm of torque rather than 148Nm. Very nice too. Performance figures are yet to be confirmed, but expect to hit 62mph in about 8 seconds and reach 125mph. This new petrol power plant is also more efficient than its predecessor, so it averages 44.1mpg rather than 39.8mpg. Inevitably, this reduces carbon emissions. These fall from 165g/km to 147g/km.

The new Suzuki Swift Sport has six-speed manual transmission, so it enables thrill- seekers to play with one extra cog than the old model. It also sits on high-performance tyres that have been specifically designed for the vehicle. This compact rocket also has numerous standard-fit safety features, including seven air-bags and an electronic stability programme. Very reassuring. This fun-focussed mile-muncher goes on sale in early 2012.
