The Vauxhall Astra VXR reminds me of the bloke who threw-in his accountancy job to become a rock star. As such, this normally sensible family workhorse is far more aggressive than one might expect. Consider the evidence: 2.0-litre turbo-charged petrol engine, a mighty 280ps, 400Nm of torque, and a top speed of 155mph. The hard-core VXR is, therefore, the most powerful production Astra ever to grace the highways. Good thing it has high-end Brembo brakes. These feel strong enough to stop the world spinning.

The new Vauxhall Astra VXR has a few more tricks to entice thrill seekers. For starters, the chassis has been tweaked by Le-Mans 24-hour race winner 'Smokin Jo Winkelhock'. These enhancements, Vauxhall say, provide 'exceptional lateral grip and traction through bends'. Sounds fun. This road legal rocket also has Vauxhall's FlexRide system. This offers enthusiastic motorists the choice of two handling set-ups - with varying damper, throttle, and steering controls. These can be described as 'attention grabbing' and 'oh my!'

This speedy machine likes to stand-out from the crowd. So, say 'hello' to the striking three-door coupé styling. Admire the sculpted front and rear bumpers, then give a knowing nod to the sporty side skirts. And how about that spoiler? It complements the trapeze shaped twin exhausts and monstrous alloy wheels. The cabin feels special too thanks to its fancy seats, flat-bottomed steering wheel, and upgraded instruments. No more dealing with HMRC, the Vauxhall Astra VXR is ready to rock.
