Hold tight... the new Volkswagen Beetle will soon walk among us. Is that a good thing?
The original version was – and still is – tremendously popular. Around 22 million were
built, making it more prolific than a rock-star at the Playboy Mansion. The Beetle was re-
invented in 1999, so a further 1 million rolled-off the production line. These were based
on the 1997 Volkswagen Golf, but were never as 'loved' as the original. Perhaps the latter
version's styling was too feminine - perhaps the pint-sized boot was a pain – perhaps
the 'flower holder' on the dashboard was a step too far. Either way, VW has now started
again.
That brings us to the new Volkswagen Beetle. This is based on the latest Golf so it is
nice to drive. Some of the niggles from the past are gone too – so the styling is now
more purposeful to appeal to a wider audience, the boot is forty per-cent larger, and the
flower holder has died from a lack of water. Thank goodness. Power comes from one
of four engines, the most potent being a 2.0-litre 197bhp petrol. Expect to hit 62mph
in 7.5 seconds and to average about 38mpg. In contrast, the most economical 1.6-litre
BlueMotion should return 66mpg. Good stuff, but this is still one of those 'love it or hate it'
cars.
