The new Volkswagen Phaeton is remarkably similar to the old Volkswagen Phaeton. In fact, it can be rather tricky to 'spot the difference'. Most notably the new variant has a slightly re- profiled bonnet and a new front bumper housing LED fog lights. Around the back the Phaeton's bumper has been modified too, as have the beautifully crafted rear lights. These tweaks bring this BMW 7 Series rival in-line with the latest VW Polo, Golf, Scirocco, and Touareg.

The new VW Phaeton's interior has evolved too, as it now has a colour display and satellite navigation that can handle Google maps. Luxury loving motorists also benefit from real-time points of interest information, a road sign display system, and a choice of rear seats. This can be either a traditional three-person bench arrangement or two individual, electrically adjustable, chairs. No wonder this leviathan has two miles of cabling connecting sixty control units.

This magnificent saloon is available with the same two engines as its predecessor. The entry- level unit is a 3.0-litre 237bhp V6 diesel that propels the Phaeton to 62mph in 8.3 seconds. Not bad for a monstrous machine that averages 32.2mpg. Alternatively, hard-core petrol lovers can specify the mighty 6.0-litre W12 power plant. This five-speed automatic predator produces 443bhp, roars to 62mph in 6.1 seconds, and is capable of a staggering 155mph.

The new Volkswagen Phaeton may be hard to distinguish from the previous generation, but that is fine by me. This is one of the most sophisticated vehicles on the planet, and VW were right to evolve the design rather than replace it. The only potential issue is price. After all, who wants to spend £47,000 to £81,000 on a VW?
