The new Volkswagen Polo 1.4 GTI shoots adrenalin levels through the roof, makes hearts thump like a heavyweight boxer, and makes driving so pleasurable motorists rarely want to leave the comfort of the sporty cabin. Quite a remarkable feat, and this is mostly achieved through the GTI's powerful engine.

This comes in the form of the 1.4-litre 178bhp four-cylinder unit that propels the GTI to 62mph in only 6.9 seconds. This free revving engine is teamed with the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission which is great, but what a shame there is no manual option for die hard purists. Top speed is 142mph which is very impressive for a practical run-around that averages 47.9mpg.

To complement the power plant lurking under bonnet the VW Polo 1.4 GTI has excellent handling. This means the steering is beautifully sharp, the transmission slick, and the brakes inspire confidence. Also, despite having lower and stiffer suspension than its standard siblings, the Polo GTI provides its speed loving occupants with a reasonably comfortable ride.

Standard VW Polo 1.4 GTI equipment includes the usual blend of air-bags, electric windows, air-conditioning, and a six speaker radio/CD player. However, it is the freakishly clever XDS system that lights a spark of excitement. During fast cornering, this technology applies brake pressure to the inner front wheel to maximise traction and minimise under-steer. Very clever too.

The new Volkswagen Polo 1.4 GTI is available as a three or five-door hatchback, and has a list price of £18,275 - £18,775. Alternatively, the range as a whole is listed in Motoring.co.uk's new car database from a bargain bucket £8,490.
