The new Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI SEL is one of the most complete superminis on the market, and it could your new pride and joy for £13,720 - £15,740. For this price lovers of small German vehicles get 88bhp, a choice of three or five doors, a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and the kind of reliability that makes oak trees look flimsier than balsa wood.

Another of the VW Polo 1.6 TDI SEL's impressive traits is its fuel economy. Therefore, this five-speed manually geared run-around achieves 52.3mpg on the urban cycle, 78.5mpg on the extra urban, and returns a combined average of 65.7mpg. This means its carbon emissions are lower than a politician's morals so this likeable supermini sits in road tax band C/£30.

Complementing the Polo's modest running costs is its impressive handling. This means the steering is beautifully weighted, there is plenty of traction for confident cornering, and the body roll is nicely controlled. The ride is also very composed which, when combined with a zero to sixty-two time of 11.5 seconds, makes the Polo 1.6 TDI SEL a capable motorway cruiser.

Standard equipment includes the multi-function computer for gadget lovers, a radio CD player with six speakers for music lovers, air-conditioning for cool air lovers, and the confidence inspiring tyre pressure indicator for everybody. Optional extras include the £815 satellite navigation system and the £575 curtain air-bags.

So, there we go. The VW Polo 1.6 TDI SEL clearly deserves serious consideration if you are looking for a small car. The only issue now is which colour to choose. My vote is for bright pink with yellow dots - but hey, fashion never was my strong point.
