The new Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion 5dr has saved my friend's sanity. He is one of those blokes who recycles every piece of cardboard, campaigns to save the whales, and lies awake worrying about the ozone layer. As such, until recently, he felt tremendously guilty that his ageing car averaged a pitiful 27mpg - and coughed-up more carbon than a bad tempered coal monster. Not any more. My friend now sleeps like a baby thanks to his new Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion. This pint-sized supermini averages a staggering 80.7mpg, and returns 91.1mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Even through town it manages a mighty 67.3mpg. Therefore, its emissions are a rock-bottom 91g/km. Good, free road tax too then.

This poses a question. Why did someone who dedicates his life to saving the planet wait until now to try the Polo BlueMotion. Well, whereas his old car polluted like a cigar in a lift – it was practical and easy to drive. He was worried that an 'eco' car would be terrible in comparison. Not this little Volkswagen. The 1.2-litre diesel engine produces 75PS, and propels planet lovers to 62mph in a decent 13.9 seconds. Furthermore, the handling is refined, the ride comfortable, and it has a respectable 280-litre boot. There are plenty of toys too, and it earned Euro NCAP's maximum five-star safety rating. My mate should have bought one months ago. At least the delay gave him time to save the £15,480. Ouch!
