Tick tock... we have waited since the dawn of time but finally the Volkswagen up! is available with auto transmission. This can be super-glued to three and five door Move up! and High up! models – excluding BlueMotion trims. Operating the auto transmission is easier than telling the time. Motorists simply select 'D' to move forward, 'R' to reverse, or 'N' for neutral. Unlike most automatic gearboxes, there is no 'P' for park. Also – when the time comes – motorists can select gears manually. Simply push the lever forward to change up a cog or slide it backwards to move down. Manual mode is helpful on long downwards hills, as it enables clock lovers to control the car's speed without using brakes.

The Volkswagen Move up! 60PS auto is more fuel efficient than its manually geared sibling. It, therefore, averages 64.2mpg rather than 62.8mpg. The High up! 75PS automatic is frugal too, returning 62.8mpg compared to its counterpart's 60.1mpg. That brings us to price. Auto trims costs £595 more than manuals, so the Move up! automatic starts from £9,675 and the High up! automatic from £11,110. Irrespective of transmission, the Volkswagen up! is a fantastic city car. Why? Because it has sure-footed handing, pleasing looks, good visibility, a decent boot, comfortable ride, and fair equipment specification. As it is a Volkswagen the up! also feels robust enough to outlast time. Tick tock.
