Is the Volvo V60 D6 AWD smarter than Albert Einstein? It might be... as its manufacturer claims it is an electric, hybrid, and muscle car rolled into one. They have a point. Why? Because the front wheels are powered by a five-cylinder 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 215hp and 440Nm of torque. The rear axle, in contrast, is propelled by a 70hp electric motor. That is smart... but what makes the V60 D6 AWD look like a genius is that motorists can choose how this torque is utilised. Their options are: 'Pure, Hybrid or Power'.

In Pure Mode, Einstein’s challenger is powered solely by its electric motor as far as possible. Emissions are therefore as low as zero, and its range is up to thirty-two miles. Once flat, the battery can be recharged via a plug. Hybrid Mode is the default setting whereby the diesel engine and the motor cooperate to ensure – Volvo claims - the 'optimal balance between driving pleasure and environmental footprint'. Carbon emissions may be as low as 49g/km, but this has not been verified. Finally, Power Mode uses the diesel engine and electric motor to produce 285hp - and propel the V60 to 62mph in 6.2 seconds.

The Volvo V60 range - as a whole - has other strengths to confuse scientists. For starters, the handling is composed and comfortable and its safety features inspire confidence. It also has a reasonable boot, estate car practicality, and sky-high image. We expect the V60 D6 AWD version to enter small-scale production in late 2012, with numbers increasing to between 4,000 and 6,000 units per-year by the end of 2013. The price will be around £47,000, minus the Government’s £5,000 Electric Vehicle Incentive Grant. That is clearly considerable - so perhaps only famous scientists can afford the D6 AWD. What is E=MC2?
