We are motoring journalists with sixty minutes to evaluate the new Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 Design. Luckily, that is enough time to poke, probe, and get to know this mile-muncher. Let us start by evaluating its looks between minutes one and five. Our conclusion... not bad. The new Beetle is stylish, vibrant, and cheerful. It is also less feminine than its most recent predecessor. The cabin is pleasing too, as we see between minutes six and fifteen. Why? Because the seats are comfortable, the dashboard attractive, and there is plenty of room considering it is a fairly small car. It has a spacious 310-litre boot too, that impresses between minutes sixteen and twenty. This capacity is similar to a current Ford Focus Hatch.

Minute twenty-one. The new Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 Design hits the road. Visibility is pleasing, the 140PS diesel engine smoothly propels it to 62mph in 9.4 seconds, and it averages 52.3mpg. Great stuff. That brings us to minute forty. The Bug's ride is bouncier than expected, and the steering less precise. Despite this, it is a pleasant vehicle to drive. Standard equipment includes the: electronic stability programme, air-con, Bluetooth, and MP3 playback. All for £20,085 in six-speed manual form, or £21,680 with the DSG. The latter enables motorists to either cruise in full-automatic mode or select the gears manually. Extras include leather seats for £2,140 and parking sensors for a further £335. We find that out at minute sixty and return the vehicle. Overall then, the new VW Beetle - at least in this form - is stylish and attractive but far from sporty. And no, we cannot paint '53' on its bonnet.
