One thing is certain in this uncertain world; the Nissan Qashqai+2 1.6 Visia is the entry- level version of this family workhorse. In other words, it is the cheap one; the least desirable; the one to avoid if funds permit. But why? This machine is fantastic. It has Nissan's legendary build quality, for starters, it handles beautifully too and has a supportive ride. It also carries seven people in comfort, or – with the rear seats folded flat – up to 1,520-litres of luggage. That is similar to the Ford Focus Estate. This £17,895 base model also has lots of gadgets. Features include the: electronic stability programme, MP3 playback, air-con, and Bluetooth. Hardly a poverty specification then, despite the low price.

However, the Nissan Qashqai+2 1.6 Visia is not perfect. It only sends 117PS through its five-speed manual transmission, for example, so it takes a lengthy 12.9 seconds to hit 62mph. Fuel economy is uninspiring too, so it only averages 42.8mpg. But so what? Let us consider the big picture. For less than £18,000, motorists can have a reliable seven-seater with an excellent Euro NCAP safety report. This stylish machine also has enough toys to make life comfortable, and it is easy to drive. So what if it can feel a little slow? And who cares if its fuel economy is mediocre? The base-spec Qashqai+2 is a still great all-rounder.
