The Renault Twingo Renaultsport Gordini 133 knows that life is extremely unfair. But why? This top-of-the-range city car – which is actually a hot-hatch – is a capable little plaything. It therefore deserves to be respected and treated properly. But no! This machine, however accomplished, will always be in the shadows of its more illustrious bedfellows. The Clio Renaultsport, for starters, is much faster and better looking - so too is the Megane Renaultsport which is a fantastic machine. As such, many of those who order this top-spec Twingo secretly prefer its hard-core brothers. It is like marrying someone because they remind you of a lost love - rather than for their own unique merits.

Despite this, we should evaluate the Twingo Renaultsport Gordini 133 on its own – not simply as a second choice. Strengths include its 1.6-litre petrol engine. This 133bhp unit propels it to 62mph in 8.7 seconds. Top speed is a pleasing 125mph. Very nice, as is the sharp handling and nicely equipped cabin. Gadgets include: air-con, electric windows, and MP3 compatibility. Low running costs are a further asset. This mile-muncher averages 42.2mpg, can be taxed annually for £165, and sits in a low insurance group. Not bad for a hot-hatchback that only costs £12,960, Time for the Twingo to emerge from the shadows.
