Brace yourself. The Seat Alhambra 2.0 TDI CR SE Lux automatic costs a terrifying £31,700. What a price for a seven-seater multi-purpose vehicle - especially as similar priced mile-munchers include the Jaguar XF and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. So why pay so much for an MPV? Well, granted it is a very capable MPV. Unlike some rivals it carries seven people in comfort, rather than shoehorning two into awkward seats. It has a huge 2,297-litre luggage capacity too, assuming the middle and rear seats are folded flat.

Good stuff, but these factors cannot justify the monstrous price tag. Perhaps the engine might. Power comes from a 2.0-litre 170PS diesel. This sends power to the six-speed transmission that has full-auto and semi-automatic options. The race to 62mph takes 9.8 seconds and this expensive workhorse reaches 127mph. All fine, but fairly unremarkable. Combined fuel consumption is 47.9mpg which is, by contrast, impressive for a large MPV.

The Seat Alhambra 2.0 TDI CR SE Lux's specification might explain the price. Features include: leather upholstery, parking sensors, climate control, and an electric sunroof. Very nice, but even combined with impressive handling and robust construction it is tricky to see why this particular Alhambra costs £31,700. Fantastic car, worrying price. Best try a lower-spec version. These start at a wallet-pleasing £22,815. What great value for money.
