The Seat Altea was once billed as the sexiest people carrier on the market. Oh really? Whereas its sweeping profile and sharp nose look good, the Altea is simply an affordable run-around for taking your kids to their after school guitar lessons. Driving the 'sexiest' MPV is like having the most 'beautiful' central heating system. Arguably nice – but irrelevant. Neither need to be sexy or attractive - just reliable, capable, and ready for work.

Good news then. The Seat Altea meets this criteria. Standard models corner with composure, have slick manual transmission, and reassuring feedback through the steering. The high-spec FR trim has stiffer suspension for a sportier drive, stronger brakes, and traction control. However, the ride suffers in comparison so – remembering this is a family workhorse not a 'sexy' sports car - best stick to the comfortable versions.

The Seat Altea's most economical engine is the 1.6-litre 105PS diesel. This averages 62.8mpg and reaches 62mph in 12.2 seconds. Bit slow? The fastest alternative is the 2.0-litre 140PS petrol that hits the mark in 9.7 seconds. This variant burns considerably more fuel though, so expect to average 57.6mpg in six-speed manual guise and 51.4mpg in the DSG automatic. New prices range from £14,780 to £20,645 (silk lingerie not included).
