Amazing but true – the Skoda Fabia Greenline II 1.2 TDI returns 94.2mpg on the extra- urban cycle. Wow! This supermini even manages 68.9mpg in town, so it averages a mind-boggling 83.1mpg. Its emissions are only 89g/km. As such, this could be the perfect car for environmentalists as it is virtually more eco-friendly than walking. The downside is modest performance, so this 75ps diesel fuel sipper takes a lengthy 14.2 seconds to reach 62mph. This might be a fair price for a clear conscience and very low running costs.

The Skoda Fabia Greenline II 1.2 TDI is highly efficient thanks to a series of technical enhancements. These include: low-rolling resistance tyres, pint-sized 15” wheels, and the low ride height. It also has a start/stop feature, plus an energy recovery system to recharge the battery. This eco-maestro even has a large rear wing, but its purpose is to maximise aerodynamic efficiency – not increase down-force as seen on performance cars.

These systems enabled hypermiling ace, Gerhard Plattner, to coax 127.8mpg from this three-cylinder diesel. This was achieved on a 1,246 mile return journey between Austria and Denmark. Little chance of the average Jo managing that, but it shows how fuel efficient this spacious five-door supermini can be. Further strengths include the: composed handling, rock-solid construction, and pleasing specification. This includes an electronic stability programme, cruise control, and air-con. What a lot of car for £13,805.
