The Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0T FSI DSG Estate just punched my friend in the face - and rightly so. He scoffed at the 'Skoda' badge, mocked the Octavia's image, and cried with laughter when he spotted 'vRS' markings on a practical estate. Big mistake. This particular load-lugger rockets to 62mph in 7.3 seconds and races to a licence losing 147mph. Coincidently, the same speed my mate retreated after the vRS rearranged his dental work.

The Skoda Octavia vRS' 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 200PS and 206lb ft of torque. This power is sent to the front wheels via six-speed automatic transmission. However, enthusiastic drivers can flick between the cogs manually too. No traditional clutch is required, so this was chucked at my friend as he fled from this robust German workhorse. Furthermore the steering is sharp, it corners beautifully, and the ride is fairly comfortable.

So, let us consider practicality. The turbocharged Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0T FSI DSG Estate can carry five people plus 605-litres of luggage. Dumping a few passengers and folding the rear seats flat increases storage space to 1,655-litres. Running costs are sensible too, as this feisty face-slapper averages 36.7mpg and its emissions are only 180g/km. This equates to road tax band I/£210. And the price? How does £22,410 sound?
