The Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI E is here. And over there too – and parked behind that old picnic table. In fact, it feels like the entry-level version of this quirky machine is pretty much everywhere. Must have some excellent characteristics then. Well, for starters it has the practicality of a hatchback complementing the styling of a 4x4. This helps fashion conscious motorists stand out from the crowd which is important to many. Furthermore, as the Skoda marque is owned by Volkswagen, the Yeti has a robust and high quality finish.

The Skoda Yeti's 1.2-litre engine produces 105PS, which sends this fashion statement to 62mph in 11.8 seconds. Not particularly fast then. On the extra-urban cycle it returns 47.9mpg, but this drops to 37.2mpg in town. The average is 44.1mpg. Not that frugal either then - especially compared to the 1.6-litre TDI CR Greenline 2 trim. This averages 61.4mpg. The 1.2-litre's advantage is its purchase cost. Prices start at £14,650 compared to £16,856. That said, high mileage drivers may think the Greenline is worth the premium.

The Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI E has safe and predicable handling – but lacks the four-wheel-drive capability of some more expensive trims. As such this is not a machine to thrash off-road, but it comfortably cruises from A to B on the tarmac. Furthermore, it can carry five people plus 416-litres of luggage. Folding the rear seats flat increases storage space to a mighty 1,760-litres. Remarkable considering its modest size. No wonder the entry-level Yeti is on every street corner – but I would rather pay extra for a more complete model.
