Welcome to 'Believe It Or Not'. This week.... the Toyota Avensis Tourer that travelled from Land's End to John O'Groats on a single tank of diesel. That is 904.9 miles from its 60-litre tank, including a stop-off at Toyota's Burnaston Plant. As such, this 2.0 D-4D T Spirit six-speed manual averaged a staggering 71.5mpg in the hands of Joe Clifford and Andrew Biddle from Banzai magazine. Those two must have very light feet; or did they hoist sails?

Joe said: “The Toyota shrugged off the mileage with ease and showed such frugality for fuel that we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it highly. That it is also comfortable, roomy, tax-friendly for business users, bursting with kit and beautifully built are simply bonuses.”

However - believe it or not – the light footed motorists had the occasional 'interesting' moment. At the beginning of their journey, the Toyota's on-board computer estimated they had a range of 580 miles - well short of their destination. In fact, this robustly constructed load-lugger covered 170 miles on the final bar of the fuel gauge alone - despite tackling mountains, hard rain, and high wind. Yes, that sounds like dear old Scotland. Believe it or not, I once completed the same journey in a Saab. That thing drank like students in Ibiza.
