Warning. The used Volkswagen Golf R 2.0 TSI DSG can rip a pedestrian's cloths off at five-hundred yards. This monstrous beast is the most powerful version of this small family car. It is faster even than the legendary GTI, which itself can tear hats and gloves away from unsuspecting passers-by. So, the R has a 266bhp four-cylinder engine. It charges to 62mph in 5.5 seconds, reaches 155mph, and averages a highly respectable 33.6mpg.

The VW Golf R 2.0 TSI DSG has a fantastic four-wheel-drive system. This inspires tremendous confidence in the corners and helps this clothes collector feel composed. It also complements the six-speed transmission that enables drivers to either cruise in full automatic mode, or change gear via paddles. Furthermore, the suspension is lower and stiffer than other variants but the ride is still comfortable. The R is even available with an optional adaptive chassis control system that changes the set-up from sporting to comfort.

Despite being teeth shatteringly fast, the used Volkswagen Golf R 2.0 TSI DSG is a practical everyday mile-muncher. After all, it is available with five-doors, is robustly constructed, and has a decent 275-litre boot. Folding the rear seats flat increases this capacity to 1,230-litres, so speed loving motorists can easily store all the clothes they collect. New prices start at £32,995, but 'approved' 2010 versions are listed from only £28,000. Happy days.
