Here is an unsurprising surprise. The Vauxhall Insignia VXR 2.8 V6 Turbo Tourer is – at the end of the day – 'only' a Vauxhall. Therefore, despite its top-of-the-range status this hard-core machine has an image problem. Many simply perceive it as a dreary rep-mobile with a silly loud engine. So, would you buy one for £20,000? How about £25,000? No chance, the price for the automatic version is an alarming £36,730. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate starts at only £31,815, and the BMW 5 Series Tourer costs from £34,990. As such, the monstrously priced Insignia needs some hard-core ammunition. Bring-out its mighty engine. The 2.8-litre V6 power plant produces 325ps. This propels the sharply- styled bodywork to 62mph in a super-speedy 6.2 seconds. Good stuff. This six-speed automatically geared wallet-wrecker even races to a pleasing 155mph. Unfortunately, the consequence of high performance is cost – so this pumped-up family car only averages 25.7mpg. Brace yourself for the road tax cost too, a twelve month disc costs £445. Ouch!

The Vauxhall Insignia VXR 2.8 V6 Turbo Tourer earns plaudits for its reasonably spacious boot, but this is still small compared to some rivals. It holds 540-litres of luggage as standard, increasing to 1,530-litres with the rear seats folded flat. Furthermore the cabin is comfortable and features: cruise control, electric everything, and partial leather seats. The handling is sharp and engaging, but this racing Insignia feels like it is fighting against its true family-focussed character. It looks like a classically trained musician in a mini skirt. I would rather save £17,380 and buy the entry-level model. It somehow feels more honest.
