The Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI SE has been on a much-needed diet. It now weighs about twenty per-cent less than its predecessor. That said, this Land Rover Discovery rival still busts the scales at a hefty 2,197kg. Just pray you never have to push it. The second generation Touareg also feels more stable than its retired older sibling. The driving experience is luxurious, relaxing, and effortless. No surprise it costs an alarming £38,955.

The Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI SE is capable off-road too, but the more expensive 3.0-litre V6 TDI 'Escape' variant is the better choice for serious mud-plungers. This £41,535 diet lover has the advanced 4XMOTION system. This includes: low range transmission, centre and rear differentials, and extra under-body protection. It also produces 240ps compared to its siblings 204, and has more torque (406 lb ft to 295 lb ft).

Standard VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI SE features include: leather seats, parking sensors, MP3 compatibility, Bluetooth, cruise control, and its 580-litre boot. This capacity increases to 1,642-litres by folding the rear seats flat into the spacious cabin. Extras include metallic paint for £700 and a sunroof for a further £1,120. This healthy food loving 4x4 also hits 62mph in 9 seconds and averages 38.9mpg. Not too bad for a monstrously large 4x4.
