Captain Jack Sparrow loves his Volvo V70. He has tonnes of loot to carry, after all, and this robustly constructed workhorse has plenty of space. Cargo capacity is, in fact, a class competitive 575-litres - increasing to 1,600-litres with the rear seats folded flat. That makes room for his silly hat too. Now, Jack has stolen a few quid over the years, so his V70 is the top-of-the-range T6 AWD R-DESIGN Geartronic. This 3.0-litre 304PS workhorse reaches 62mph in a speedy 6.9 seconds and is capable of 155mph, so it is great for escaping from other pirates. The downside is that it cost Jack Sparrow – sorry, 'Captain' Jack Sparrow – a pricey £38,235 - and it only averages 27.2mpg. Just as well this pirate has tonnes of gold.

Fortunately, the Volvo V70 T6 AWD R-DESIGN has numerous features to justify its alarming price. These include its: leather seats, cruise control, MP3 compatibility, and the electronic stability programme. However, considering its cost, Captain Jack was surprised to learn that parking sensors and Bluetooth are optional cost extras. On the plus side, this mile-muncher feels extremely secure on the road thanks to its four-wheel-drive system. It also has a comfy ride for long cruises, and feels robust enough to outlast any pirate ship. It has a reassuring Euro NCAP safety rating too, and this top-spec version has silky-smooth six-speed automatic transmission. That leaves Sparrow's left hand free to wave his sword.
