The Volvo XC60 is offered in both front and four wheel drive and there is a range of engines including two five cylinder diesels and a T5 petrol and a 3.0 litre T6 petrol unit. The Ford Kuga is available with improved engines including a powerful 161 bhp 2.0 litre diesel unit.

The XC60 isn't particularly cheap with prices starting at £27,260 but discounts on the list price are readily available and some rivals cost plenty more. You can also rest easy knowing that the Volvo XC60's resale values are among the best in the class. The front-wheel-drive DRIVe version gives you good fuel economy, and the reasonable emissions mean it's affordable to run as a company car.

The new Ford Kuga is currently available from £23,645; there is also a finance promotion available at a competitive low rate with the two year Ford Options plan across the entire Ford Kuga range. Standard features include 17” alloy wheels, ESP, Ford KeyFree system, partial leather trim, quick clear heated windscreen, dual electronic automatic temperature control and a Sony CD/DAB audio system. Ford Accident Management is also a standard feature which gives additional peace of mind.

Every Volvo XC60 is well equipped. Entry-level ES models come with 17-inch alloys, four electric windows, steering wheel-mounted stereo controls, climate control and cruise control. Extras on SE models include a power-operated tailgate, a USB input, reversing sensors and Bluetooth.
