What is it?
The Infiniti Q50 is a prestigious, mid-size, executive saloon with sharp styling and confident handling. It is the brand's “technologically refined sports saloon”, Infiniti says.
The headline feature is that some versions have Direct Adaptive Steering that controls the wheels via electronic signals rather than a mechanical connection. Its purpose is to minimise vibration and provide an “unprecedented level of handling personalisation” to tweak the feel.
It is a “world first”, the car maker says. The Infiniti Q50 is also available with rear or 4-wheel drive, has 4 doors, 5 seats plus a class competitive, 500-litre, cargo capacity.
Infiniti Q50 engines include the 2.2-litre, 170PS, diesel that – when teamed to 7-speed auto transmission – propels it to 62mph in 8.5 seconds.
Depending on the trim, average fuel consumption varies from 61.4 to 62.8mpg and carbon emissions from 123 to 119g/km. It has 400Nm of torque too. Infiniti claims this power plant is “as clean burning and fuel efficient as it is emotionally invigorating”.
Engine performance, fuel consumption and emissions only suffer slightly when it is bolted to the 6-speed manual gearbox.
The Q50 2.0-litre, 211PS, turbo petrol engine is only available with the auto gearbox, in contrast. It produces 350Nm of torque, propels motorists to 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds, averages 43.5 to 44.8mpg and has emissions of 151 to 146g/km. Infiniti claims it ”delivers sustained acceleration” and “outstanding responsiveness”.
The Infiniti Q50 3.5-litre Hybrid engine is the most powerful in the range. This petrol/electric produces 360PS, is teamed with auto transmission, and has 546Nm of torque.
Depending on the trim, 0-62mph times vary from 5.1 to 5.4 seconds, fuel consumption from 41.5 to 45.6mpg and emissions from 159 to 144g/km. Infiniti says this unit has “outstanding responsiveness” and strong acceleration.
Trims & equipment
New Infiniti Q50 trims include: SE, Premium, Premium Tech, Sport, Sport Tech, Hybrid Sport and Hybrid Sport Tech.
Equipment highlights include the Around View Monitor that provides a 360 degree, aerial view, of the surrounds to make parking easier. Images come via a camera on each side and a colour screen.
The Q50 also has: hill-start to prevent it rolling on slopes, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor, automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, tyre pressure monitor, voice recognition, dual touch-screen interface and Bluetooth with 2 USB connectors.
It also has satellite navigation and parking sensors.
The Q50 SE costs £28,950, the Premium is £31,350 and the Premium Tech costs £39,400. The Sport is £33,720 rising to Sport Tech (£40,170), Hybrid Sport (£40,700), and Hybrid Sport Tech (£45,600).
