10 Cheapest Cars to Insure In 2019
See if you can make a saving in 2019 with a car you can insure on the cheap...
10. Volkswagen Polo from £15,735
The new Polo is a car that most of us would be able to live with quite happily. It’s highly functional for everyday use and probably one of the most desirable small hatchbacks on the market. And, because it is a Volkswagen it is available with a huge amount of engine and performance options. If you’re looking for cheap insurance, look at the 1.0-litre petrol model with 80 PS - in SE spec this model falls into insurance group 1. The lowest bracket on the chart. This model should also return up to 48.6 mpg. The SE model comes with niceties such as alloy wheels, leather steering wheel, a big colourful central display you connect your apps too. Lovely.
The Polo SE is available on a 4 year PCP for £155 per month at 5.2% APR.
9. Nissan Micra
The new Micra from Nissan is a truly underrated gem. It’s a car that serves its purpose fantastically and can be bought, owned and maintained all for a pretty agreeable rate. The pick of the bunch in terms of car insurance would be a 1.0 litre 75 PS petrol model. You can get a high tier ‘Acenta’ model with cruise control, an improved sound system, smartphone integration, alloy wheels and LED running lights and still be in the cheapest insurance bracket. You could also get the more affordable Visia model which starts at £12,880.
8. Toyota Yaris
The Yaris has created a new identity in recent years as a considerably more characterful, playful and excitable car. When compared to the rest of the market there is no denying that the design and nature of the Yaris are clearly unique. The entry-level model falls into insurance group 3 out of 50, which is impressive, to say the least, for the 1.0 Active model which, again, comes with lots of equipment. Fulls USB connectivity, electric windows and LED front lights, to name a few. This model starts at £12,995.
7. Dacia Sandero from £6,995
The Sandero slides itself nicely into Insurance Group 3 in its 16V Access guise. The car itself is also extremely cheap to buy on the new market and the used market too. Dacia pride themselves on offering the most affordable new cars on the market and this is reflected in insurance premiums due to spare parts being plentiful and affordable. Although Dacia have only been in the UK since 2012 they have been increasingly popular and share many components with the Renault Clio.
PCP offers from £79 per month at 6.9% APR.
6. Hyundai i10 from £9,200
The Hyundai i10 falls into Insurance Group 2, one of the most affordable groups. The new i10 comes with a brilliantly economical 1.0 litre unit which will return up to 55mpg. The current i10 was voted as the Best City Car at the 2017 Car of The Year Awards and benefits from a 7 year warranty provided as standard from Hyundai. These can now be picked up from as little as £115 a month on a 24 month PCP deal with 0% APR.
5. Vauxhall Corsa
The Corsa is famously popular with young drivers and for good reason. It’s reasonably priced, easy to live with and it is still a pretty good looking little thing. You need to look at the 1.4-litre petrol models for the best value on insurance, which might surprise very young buyers who are typically looking at 1.0 litre and 1.2-litre cars, but this 1.4 is reasonably powered with 75 PS and will get up to 43 mpg on the motorway. Pick this engine with the Design trim level and you even get a big central touch screen with smartphone connectivity, as well as a load of other cool technology features. This is on sale right now from £13,460.
4. KIA Rio 2 from £14,735
One of the bigger vehicles on this list is the Rio from KIA. This a spacious 5 door hatchback which would work well for small families. The most economical Rio 2 models are the 1.25 ISG (83bhp) and the 1.4 ISG (98bhp) with combined mpg of up to 51 mpg which place themselves in insurance group 4, which is where you’ll make your first saving, and also through ownership, you’ll benefit from the 7 year warranty that comes with Kia models. Savings, and more savings!
3. Ford Fiesta
Obviously, the Ford Fiesta was going to appear among this list of small, affordable hatchbacks. Insurance is very affordable with the Fiesta, it’s another reason as to why it just sells so well. To keep your insurance low you need to look for a Style 1.1L TI-VCT 70PS model. This model falls into the insurance group 3 out of 50. This model is available as both a 3 door and a 5 door and on the motorway can return up to 65 mpg. The Fiesta is available with a huge range of specs and engines and although the 1.1 litre Style is the cheapest on insurance, they’re all going to be pretty affordable other than the high powered ST hot hatch models. The Fiesta is on sale now with prices from £15,670.
2. SEAT Ibiza from £15,500
Stylish, sexy, sporty… SEAT. The VW Polo with added panache. Arguably the most appealing car on this list for young drivers thanks to its dynamic and aggressive appearance, the SEAT is a real treat. For the most affordable insurance (group 2E), you need to look at 5 door SE or SE technology models with the 1.0-litre 75PS petrol engine. These models £15,500 and £16,130 respectively, and are kitted out with features such as Bluetooth streaming, a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple Car Play, alloys and a leather steering wheel with mounted controls. The Technology spec has all of this and LED lights as well as bigger alloys and an even bigger touch screen.
1. Skoda Fabia from £12,260
The Fabia, which is based heavily on the Volkswagen Polo, is one of the most affordable and accessible Skoda’s on the market. It's very economical and is suitably spacious. Even better, the Skoda S 1.0 MPI 60PS falls into insurance group 1E, so this goes some way toward explaining why owners like it so much!
