Highlights from the Geneva Motorshow 2017
A quick look at ten of the cars taking a lot of limelight in Switzerland this year…
10. Honda Civic Type R
You thought that last generation of the Type R was bonkers? Check this thing out! Angles, lots of them. This will be the most powerful Civic Type R that Honda have ever produced and the manufacturer is hoping to take back the crown of the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nurburgring. Exciting. 9. BMW 5 Series Touring
Best looking ‘wagon’ on the market? The new generation 5 series is now on sale in the UK in saloon form, but at Geneva, we got a proper look at how the Touring model will present itself. The most popular model, the 520d, will return you a solid 62.8mpg, while the 540i petrol will do the 0-60mph run in 5.1 seconds.
The 5 Series is now a properly big car, though, in fact, it’s now longer than the 7 series from the early 00’s. The new car does have a load of tech carried over from the new 7 series, though, which is only ever a good thing. You can park it remotely with the key fob, it has a WiFi hotspot, wireless charging as well as the new and improved iDrive system. Lots of toys.
8. McLaren 720S
McLaren has unveiled the next generation of their super series in the form of the 720S. Powered by a 4.0litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine, the 720S pumps out a massive 720 horsepower… hence the name. 0-60mph will take just 2.8 seconds and, 0-124mph in 7.8 seconds and all the way to a top speed of 212mph. The 720S is composed of an awful lot of carbon fibre and weighs just 1,283kg - that’s less than a Volkswagen Golf. Starting price is £208,600 - that’s more than a Volkswagen Golf.
7. Audi RS5
The new RS5 was on display in Geneva, and, wow. What a monster this looks to be. A relatively sensible Coupé which is over half a second faster to 60mph than the Audi R8 V8. Yes - you read that right. An RS5, faster than the early R8. 3.9seconds it will take. Mental.
Powered by a 2.9litre TFSI engine with 450PS and 600Nm of torque - this thing goes like stink and can return up to 32mpg… apparently.
6. Alpine A110
A mid-engined sports car with 249bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 4.5 seconds is enough to get any petrolheads heart racing. 55 years after the original A110, a new model is coming to the UK featuring a 1.8litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Ok, it doesn’t sound all that meaty under the bonnet, but the A110 will weigh in at just 1,080kg. This will be hot on the tail of the Porsche Cayman S.
5. Ferrari 812 SuperFast
A bit of a silly name - arguably arrogant - but undoubtedly delicious. Introducing the Ferrari 812 SuperFast, the most powerful and fastest road-going Ferrari ever built. To make weight distribution as perfect as possible, Ferrari has coupled the front-mounted engine with a rear-mounted transmission and ‘exploits a highly evolved transaxle architecture.’
That’s all very technical. It’s red, it’s got a massive V12 engine and is properly rapid - also it looks the business.
4. Range Rover Velar
A car which was unveiled a week before the show, the new Range Rover Velar. Sitting pretty in between the Evoque and the Sport in terms of size and pricing, the Velar extends the Range Rover brand into unknown territories. Starting from £45,000 - this model aligns itself with the equally desirable Porsche Macan.
Debuting revolutionary new technology for the Range Rover brand, this Velar is a statement of intent from the Land Rover brand, and it prioritises clever material selection, decluttering the cabin and reducing weight. An interesting prospect for sure...
3. Toyota Yaris GRMN
A new Yaris is on the way in the coming months, but there’s a certain model that has attracted a lot of attention. The GRMN from Gazoo Racing. It’s got a central exhaust, 17 inch BBs alloys, a big spoiler, a rear diffuser and some lovely bumpers… Oh and a 1.8litre supercharged engine which will be putting out more than 205bhp. Don’t know how much more than 205bhp, they won’t tell us, but there will be more. This puts it ahead of the hot hatch competition, except for the Clio Trophy 220 - which had 220bhp.
Either way, looks a cracking car and we can’t wait to get our hands on one!
2. Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo
Just as the population were finally coming round to the unique looks of the Panamera, they’ve gone and created another, even more radically designed, model in the form of the Sport Turismo. Think of this as a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake and various other prestigious, styled-out estate. A real head turner with a serious road presence and a massive spoiler.
1. Ford Fiesta ST
And last but not least, a new Ford Fiesta! No longer powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, this time it’s being eco-boosted through a 1.5litre 3 cylinder unit, again with a turbocharger, but when you’re not on the gas the engine will shut down the third cylinder, hugely increasing fuel economy as you pootle around on just 2 cylinders!
Don’t panic, fast-Ford-fans, the loss of the extra cylinder has been compensated with the addition of an extra 17bhp over the outgoing model, taking the new power output up to 197bhp. More relevantly, torque has gone up from 240Nm to 290Nm which means the new ST can crack on from 0-60mph in just 6.7 seconds.
