15. Nissan Micra
The Micra from Nissan is a lovely option for no-fuss buyers who are looking for a nice and easy car to live with. Boot space is better than most in its class, the engines are particularly clean and running costs are exceptionally low. You'll find the Micra offers a nice amount of interior space when compared to similar vehicles in its class too and the Acenta spec comes generously equipped.
14. Renault Twingo
Next in the list is the all-new Twingo from Renault. The Twingo is currently the latest addition to the Renault range and now comes with an all new 1 litre engine with a turbocharged option. What's better is that the Twingo can be yours from just £129 per month on a 0% APR deal. Combined with the lack of road tax and high economy, this is one seriously affordable car to buy and own.
13. Peugeot 208
Peugeot have released the latest 208 to the UK market and it has been well received due to the stylish aesthetics, generous spec levels and its affordability. The 1.0 petrol model will return a fantastic 66mpg at just a smidgen over £10k.
12. Hyundai i10
We’re big fans of the i10 from Hyundai here at Motoring.co.uk - the i10 offers a lot in terms of mileage (66mpg from a petrol) and also delivers with a modest--yet-pleasing specification. A five year warranty is provided but it’s unlikely you’ll ever need it.
11. Dacia Logan
The Logan is a ‘modern and functional estate’ from Renault’s budget brand Dacia. The Logan starts at £6,995 but for the diesel estate (which qualifies for £0 Road Tax) you’ll have to extend up to the ambiance spec and the more expensive diesel engine. Although 74mpg will reward you for doing so in due course.
10. Seat Mii
The Mii is SEAT’s offering to the supermini market and it is quite a cute and quirky little number, not too dissimilar to its blood brothers the Citigo and Up! - the Mii offers a compromise between specification and expense.
9. Skoda Citigo
Built on the same platform as the VW Up! and SEAT Mii, the Citigo comes in at £500 cheaper than the latter and almost a grand cheaper than the former, mainly because it sports the Skoda badge - but the VAG underpinnings are well thought of and the car is a sound purchase.
8. Mitsubishi Mirage
Built from the ground up to be as light and efficient as possible while still being practical and fun to drive.’ That is the claim from Mitsubishi, they certainly achieved the ‘light and efficient’ part - and the Mirage is a great car for nipping around tight city centres and parking with ease.
7. Dacia Sandero
This is the Diesel variant of the entry level model from Renault’s budget-brand, Dacia. If you’re happy to sacrifice some creature comforts and you just want something to get from A to B, you’ll do well to beat the Sandero - particularly when it will achieve 69 mpg on motorway journeys.
6. Toyota Aygo
The most expensive of three similar city-hatches in the 108 and C1 from French rivals Peugeot and Citroen respectively. Although the Aygo does offer sharper looks and a more appealing front-end.
5. Renault Twizy
Typically, most electric cars cost an eye-watering amount to get on the road in the first place, not the Twizy though! This little thing starts at just £7,595 and is perfect for nipping through the city centre and parking pretty much anywhere. No, it isn’t good for motorway journeys, and no you can’t have more than one passenger, but think of all the money you’ll save!
4. Citroen C1
Sharing the same chassis and engine layout as the Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo - they all offer identical cost-cutting figures in terms of mileage, tax, insurance and CO2 emissions.
3. Kia Picanto
The Picanto from Kia comes with a solid 7 year warranty which, in partnership with the low insurance bracket, low fuel consumption and lack of tax, makes the Picanto a very affordable long termer.
2. Suzuki Celerio
The new Celerio from Suzuki is fresh to the market for 2015 and offers practical city-car dimensions while providing a better spec level than the cheaper Alto. A very sensible buy.
1. Peugeot 108
If you’re looking for a cheap car to own and run then there are few that can beat the 108. With no road tax, if you buy the 108 on the Just Add Fuel deal then you get 3 years insurance, 3 years warranty, 3 years servicing and 3 years of roadside assistance included. Now THAT is a good deal!
