New Car Models for 2019 - What's Coming This Year?
A look at what new models are coming in the next 12 months
10. SEAT Tarraco
SEAT only ventured into the SUV market a couple of years ago, initially with their Ateca, then the smaller Arona followed shortly after. They’re keen on bolstering their presence in the big-car market though and in 2019 they will be launching their first 7 seat SUV in the form of the Tarraco. It’s quite a sporty looking thing, which is a strange thing to say about such a large vehicle, but it pulls off the SEAT styling cues elegantly and most people will agree that it’s a rather pretty car. Equipment and material levels are suitably high for the Tarraco and drivers will be happy to know that lane-keeping assistance is provided as standard, so too is pedestrian and impact sensors which aim to reduce or prevent collisions. The Tarraco is available for pre-order right now and we expect deliveries to start by Springtime. If you’d like to place an order, models start from a reasonable £28,320.
9. Mercedes-Benz GLB
Mercedes are back and keen to add yet another model to their extensive SUV lineup. The GLB will sit between the GLA and GLC, as you might have guessed. More practical than the lifted A-Class and more cutely proportioned than the mid-size GLC. We’re expecting the GLB to be priced roughly between the GLA and GLC, so anticipate a starting price around £28,000. There will be a powerful GLB 35 model released too, with about 300 horsepower to play with, although this is like to be considerably more expensive than a regular model. Inside, the GLB will be gifted the beautiful 10.5 touchscreen infotainment that exists across the Mercedes range, and an optional, customisable instrument cluster will be available at a slight premium. The GLB goes toe to toe with BMWs X1 which makes it a very important model for Mercedes, as the X1 is BMW’s top-selling SUV by some margin.
8. Toyota Corolla
The Corolla nametag has been dormant in the UK for quite some time now, but in February of 2019, you’ll see a new, stylish and modern family of medium-sized cars enter the Toyota showrooms. The Corolla will be available as a Hatchback, a Touring Sports and also a saloon. All 3 body shapes will be made available with a 1.8-litre hybrid petrol engine as well as a 1.2-litre petrol. The hybrid is exclusively available as an automatic at the moment and the non-hybrid is exclusively available as a manual. Prices start from £21,300 for the Hatchback and £23,750 if you would like it spec’d as a hybrid, although the official economy figures are yet to be announced. We’d expect the car to achieve over 70mpg though, like the smaller Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
7. Ford Focus Active
Ford is releasing a new crossover for 2019 in the shape of the top-selling Ford Focus, only it’s been lifted by 30mm and it now sports some durable bumpers around the wheel arches as well as skid plates. This is a more lifestyle-orientated car than the regular Focus, as you can tell by the surfboards and mountain-bikers in the promotional photos. The Focus Active comes at a time where Ford is revising their crossover lineup, and you can also expect a Fiesta Active and KA+ Active. The Focus Active could prove to be a hugely important car for Ford and it starts from a pretty reasonable price of just £21,900 - which is great value in this class.
6. Porsche Cayenne coupe
The Porsche Cayenne Coupe was first spotted being tested on the Nurburgring back in September and it looks like in 2019 it will be entering the showrooms. The details are few and far between but we can see that the Cayenne will sport a similar side profile to the Lamborghini Urus, with it’s sloped roofline and forward leaning posture. The Porsche will share a lot of underpinnings with the Urus too, with them both coming from underneath the Volkswagen Audi Group umbrella. The Cayenne Coupe will more closely rival the likes of the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe. As this is a brand new car we have no real indication of the price tag of the Cayenne Coupe just yet but figures should be announced before summer.
5. Citroen C5 Aircross
The Citroen C5 is the latest ‘people carrier’ to be transformed into an SUV, and to mark such a momentous shift in styling the word ‘Aircross’ has been added to the end of the name… We don’t know what that means. We do know that the C5 Aircross is a playful, quirky and friendly family car that offers a softer approach to a family SUV than most of its competitors. Alongside the likes of the Peugeot 5008, Mazda CX-5 and Honda HR-V, the Citroen is by far the most eye-catching and youthful. The odd-shaped vents and inlets on the exterior are mirrored by the shapely fixtures and fittings of the interior and, all in all, it’s quite an exciting package that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It offers good value as well, with prices from £23,225 and it is available to order right now. Go for a test drive and take the kids!
4. Toyota Supra
That’s right. The Japanese working class supercar is making a long-overdue return to the roads. Sharing its platform and underpinnings with the exquisite new BMW Z4, this Supra looks like one of the most promising performance cars available on a modest budget. We say modest, it won’t be cheap as such but we’re confident that buyers will get a lot of bang for their buck with the new Toyota Supra. We’re not sure of the pricing yet or of any of the specs, but the Supra is due to be officially unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show this January, so we’ll have to wait and see what’s in store.
3. Skoda Vision X
Skoda has released a concept car in a zesty lime green colour, which means it must be youthful and energetic. It looks that way. The Vision X was a concept car teased back in March of 2018 but it looks like it might be going into production in 2019. The Vision X is a small SUV/ crossover that will rival the equally playful Citroen C3 Aircross in terms of its joyous looks and family-orientated functionality. While the exterior of the Vision X isn’t that over-the-top as such, the concept car has interior features that look like they’ve been dragged out of the cockpit of a Star Wars spacecraft and, apparently, the design is rumoured to be reasonably close to the final product. There are no performance or efficiency figures yet and we’ve no real idea of what price point the Vision X will hit, in fact, we don’t even know if it will be called the Vision X. We’ll just have to wait and see.
2. Hyundai i30 Fastback N
A Fastback version of Hyundais most explosive model ever built is likely to be on sale in 2019. The ‘Fastback’ is basically halfway between a hatchback and a saloon. It has a sloped rear end but still a relatively short rear-overhang. It certainly looks that little bit mature than the i30 N hatch, but it will still pack the same punch, with an engine that puts down 273 horsepower and taking the 0-60 mph sprint to just 6.1 seconds. A second or so behind the considerably more expensive Golf R and Audi S3, but it is also likely to be considerably more affordable than both of those. It will still be nice and practical too, with five doors and a healthy-sized 450-litre boot. It looks like a car that will bring out the boy-racer in all of us without getting too many concerning looks from pedestrians, and it’s likely to cost from just under £30,000 - which isn’t bad considering it’s potential.
1. Volkswagen T-Cross
And last but not least, another crossover/ SUV thing. The T-Cross will fit into the VW SUV range as the smallest sibling and it will be priced from a very agreeable £17,000 - though all the press pictures include the top-spec R model with glorious large wheels and glitzy exterior fittings which will cost a good few grand on top. Still, though, it’s a genuinely attractive SUV that will take customers away from the likes of the Kia Stonic, SEAT Aronda and Citroen C4 Cactus. It might be shorter than the Golf hatchback, but the T-Cross will actually have a bigger boot (up to 455 litres). The interior will be more like the Polo though, so you’ll sacrifice some interior space if you're moving from a Golf to a T-Cross. The small SUV market is incredibly popular at the moment, though, and we can see this car quickly becoming one of Volkswagen’s most important models.
