Need a big boot for a growing family? Look no further...
The VW Golf used to be considered the most practical hatchback on the market, and it's still a very good 'all rounder', but it's falling behind in terms of boot space. 380 litres is plenty of space for most tasks. More than enough for the weekly shop or a couple of golf bags, but those who frequent IKEA may want to look at something with a bit more room.
Just about snubbing the Golf, the Volvo V40. 391 litres is falling ever so slightly short of the 400 litre mark, which is the industry standard threshold of 'yeah, that's more than I'll likely ever need.' The V40 is, however, very easy to load thanks to the low boot lip, and can easily store taller objects as the boot has plenty of depth and height.
Not only is the Megane a beautifully designed car, it's also got a healthy sized boot! The loading lip is slightly higher than you'd like, which is a very small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, but the Megane will surpass most buyers expectations as the loading space is tardis-like. From the outside, it's difficult to see where the sleek Megane hides it all...
The Mini Countryman was welcomed with raised eyebrows, as a lot of the population thought a small SUV / big hatchback is a step too far from a brand who, lets be honest, were only famous for one model. Luckily, we've all acclimatized to the Countryman now, and the bigger MINI has proven to be a success thanks to its ease of use, high levels of practicality and frugal engines. 450 litres has taken the MINI Countryman to lofty heights in this list, needless to say - that's not a very MINI boot...
We’ve only got kind words to say about the 308. It’s fashionably French with the incredible engines that Peugeot have now won countless awards for and, as family cars go, it’s got 5-star running costs. The mpg’s that can be achieved are very easy on the wallet and the exterior is pleasing too. The boot is up there with the very best in this class. 470 litres is almost an extra 20% more than the famous Golf. There’s a resurgence brewing at Peugeot and it might be the right time to get involved...
Some of the new Civics have 420 litres of boot space, which is a lot, but if you choose the EX or Prestige models you get a removable boot floor which adds an extra 58 litres of room. The wheel arches creep in slightly, so the boot is a bit of a weird shape, but the loading lip is low and there's just loads of room. Fold the rear seats down and you get a huge 1,580 litres.
Top of the list - by a significant margin - is the new Octavia from Skoda. It’s one of the best-selling products across the entire VAG range due to the conservative looks, comfortable driving and class-leading practicality. The Octavia is a very easy car to live with and the boot is as good as 100 litres greater in size than the nearest competitors. That’s a lot! Naturally, the Skoda comes with solid reliability and builds quality as well as fantastically good deals. This is an excellent ‘all-rounder.’
