For less than eleven thousand pounds Dacia offer you their Duster, a compact front-wheel-drive SUV with a 1.6 litre petrol engine and the ‘Access’ spec level. (Diesel 4x4 models are available.) The Duster has just been facelifted so it's more rugged, robust and as always a nice ride height.

This city car from Ford offers fun-to-drive handling and is big on space. The KA+'s platform is a shortened version of the Fiesta so making it more spacious than other city cars. Starting price of the Aygo is £9495 - great start. Below the £10k Budget though you could get the Aygo 3dr x spec which comes with Aux, USB, daytime LED running lights, electric front windows, and a tyre pressure warning system. That’s unbelievable spec for a brand new Toyota under ten grand. The only compromises are the ride-quality, which isn’t as fun as the previous Aygo, and the rear seats, which feel a bit smaller. But it's quirky looks still make it a great car.

The Citigo is the cheapest variation of the VAG format which is also shared with the Up! and Mii. The tiny dimensions and zippy 3 cylinder engines make this a real hoot around town, but the interior design really maximises the luggage space and leg room. You’ll do well to get more ‘bang for your buck’ than this new generation model from Hyundai. The i10 is the most practical and the most pleasing to drive than all of the rivals in its class. The cabin is nearly silent as you drive along and there is a nice blend of comfort and control. The S spec with the 1.0 engine is in insurance group 2 - so one of the cheapest groups available.
