Cheapest electric cars of 2022: named and explained

Some of the nation’s favourite manufacturers have named their cheapest, zero emission, fully electric cars of 2022. There are plenty of models to choose from. Options include superminis, SUVs and high performance sports models that make you smile on twisty roads.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Standard Range RWD: £47,530

Ford has been one of the best selling car brands in the UK for years. The Mustang Mach-E is its electric sports-utility vehicle and it feels vibrant. It has a ‘Mustang’ badge, after all. Even this entry-level version has 269PS, confident handling, and potent performance. It rockets to 62mph in only 6.9 seconds. The Ford’s maximum range per charge is 273 miles.

Kia e-Niro 2 39kWh Automatic: £32,895

Kia has now established itself as a capable brand that deserves respect. It is not merely a budget choice. The e-Niro is its compact sports-utility model. Strengths include the restrained styling and high equipment specification. It can also be charged from 0% to 80% in only 54 minutes, via a 100kW rapid charger. The car’s seven year/100 000 mile warranty implies it is built to last.

Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive: £45,990

The Tesla Model 3 is a high-performance saloon that reaches 60mph in 5.8 seconds – even in its most basic form. The top seed is 140mph. This fashion statement has the handling to match its performance. It feels sure-footed and inspires confidence. It travels a long way per charge, too. The maximum range is 305 miles.

Vauxhall Corsa-e GS Line Electric 11kW: £27,055

The Vauxhall Corsa-e is a compact, low-cost, fully electric supermini from one of the most popular brands in the UK. Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking that comes into its own if you fail to react to a hazard. It complements a black roof that contrasts the rest of the bodywork. Sports seats and bi-colour wheels further enhance the car’s appeal.

Volkswagen ID.3 Life 58kWh Pro Performance: £35,835

The Volkswagen ID.3 is a small family car that feels ahead of its time. You can set it to automatically start the air-conditioning before your journey, for instance. There is no need to get into a hot cabin. You can also work apps on your phone via the car’s large, clear, colour screen. The wireless phone charger adds yet more convenience. This car’s maximum range is 259 miles per charge.

Other big selling brands

Other options include the Renault Zoe E-Tech from £30,495. This supermini is well equipped, small enough to park easily in town and stylish. The Nissan LEAF is an option, too. This family model can often be driven via its throttle pedal only - simply lift off the throttle and the car reacts as if you tapped the brake pedal. Prices start from £26,995.

The MINI Electric is a further tantalising prospect. Its key strength for fashion conscious buyers is that it stands out from the crowd. This supermini cannot be mistaken. Prices start at £28,500. The MG5 EV Long Range is available, too. This estate is spacious and unpretentious. It costs from £28,195. On the premium side, Jaguar has the I-PACE - a fast, cosseting, and luxurious sports-utility vehicle. All from £65,620.

Keep your eyes peeled for part two of this run down next week.
