Research has shown the top 10 causes of road traffic accidents, and they may just encourage you to pay extra attention behind the wheel.

The Department for Transport revealed its findings after it conducted research into contributory factors that have played a part in crashes.

There’s something for us all to take out from the below, including when we’re using the road as pedestrians…

Top 10 causes

Driver / rider failed to look properly – 38%

Driver / rider failed to judge another person’s speed – 20%

Driver / rider was careless, reckless or in a hurry – 18%

Poor turn or manoeuvre – 12%

Loss of control – 11%

Slippery road – 8%

Exceeding speed limit – 7%

Pedestrian failed to look properly – 7%

Traveling too fast for conditions – 6%

Sudden breaking – 5%

Some incidents include multiple factors as they were deemed to have contributed.
