Essex car meet leads to one arrest and 22 tickets

An Essex car meet, in which around 450 vehicles turned up, led to one arrest and another 22 drivers handed penalty points on the weekend.

Car meets have been a regular annoyance for police forces across the UK, with numerous instances being reported over the years of fines and arrests as a result of these meets, which have often led to various forms of antisocial behavior.

The one in Essex saw drivers’ disperse and recongregate at numerous points across the county before the event was finally separated for good just before midnight.

Ch Insp Melton told the BBC: "These events do pose a danger to the public as there is often an element who will be driving anti-socially and dangerously. Only a few years ago a young woman had to have part of her leg amputated after being hit by a motorbike at an illegal meet. Our roads policing teams continue to work to tackle street racing, dangerous driving, and anti-social driving because we know the risk it poses and the harm it can cause."
