At last! The Mercedes-Benz EQA is the company’s first, fully electric, compact sports-utility vehicle and we finally know something about it. It launches first in 250 form, for example. Other models will follow in due course. The manufacturer also revealed how much power the 250 has, its maximum range, charge times and equipment specification. And we’ve trawled through the detail to bring you the key points.
Styling
The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 looks typical of a modern, compact sports-utility vehicle (at a glance). That is probably for the best. Why? Because it is a big step for drivers to swap from traditional, long-established vehicles powered by internal combustion to electric alternatives. The technology can feel unfamiliar and there is plenty to learn. Such things are unnerving.
The vehicle’s familiar look eases the transition. So, despite having a new power source it looks manageable. Any overtly futuristic styling – combined with the unfamiliar power source – might be too much for many people to accept in 2021. However, new tech blended with a familiar vibe is more bite-size. That said, there are a few features that make this car stand out. For example:
- continuous light strip between the headlamps (and tail lights)
- there is no combustion engine to cool so the car has solid, black, plastic trim rather than a traditional radiator grille.
Power, range, and charge times
The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 is powered with a single electric motor on its front wheels. The motor produces 190 hp and 375 Nm of torque. Expect 0 - 62 mph in 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 99 mph.
The EQA 250’s maximum range is 264 miles per-charge via its 66.5 kWh battery. This range is based on the newer, more realistic test cycle (WLTP). Once flat, the battery can be charged in 30 minutes with a DC rapid charge station, Mercedes-Benz stated. This rises to 5 hours and 45 minutes via a wall box (or AC public charge station).
Equipment
The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 has a decent standard equipment specification. Active Brake Assist, for example. If you fail to react to a hazard such as a vehicle slowing ahead, this system brakes automatically on your behalf. Its purpose is to avoid a collision or mitigate its severity. This sports-utility vehicle also has an electric tailgate, countless airbags, reversing camera, leather steering wheel and an advanced infotainment system.
Price and availability
The EQA went on sale in the UK earlier this month, with a choice of Sport (£40,495 after government grant) and AMG Line (£41,995 after government grant) trim levels.
