Mercedes has just pulled off something wild: its new AMG GT XX concept covered 3,405 miles in just 24 hours, the furthest distance ever driven by an electric car in a single day.
The record was set at the legendary Nardo test track in Italy, where the futuristic four-door prototype lapped the 7.8-mile circuit at an insane average speed of 186mph. The only pit stops were a few five-minute charging breaks thanks to its next-gen 900kW charging tech.
But here’s the crazy part. That wasn’t the only record it broke. Over an eight-day endurance run, the GT XX racked up more “longest distance in X hours” titles than you can count, even driving the entire length of the Earth’s equator, 24,901 miles, in just over 7.5 days.
For context, the previous record holder, Chinese brand XPeng, managed 2,461 miles in a day earlier this month. Mercedes obliterated that figure in less than a week.
How Did They Do It?
The record run wasn’t just one car and a single driver. Mercedes used two prototypes and 17 pro drivers, including F1 star George Russell. Rotating in shifts, the team kept the cars running almost non-stop, backed by around 100 engineers and support staff from AMG’s HQ.
The AMG GT XX isn’t just about speed, it’s a sneak peek at where EV tech is heading.
- 1,341 horsepower from three compact axial-flux motors, developed in the UK by YASA
- A huge 114kWh oil-cooled battery that charges fast enough to add 250 miles in five minutes
- A top speed of 224mph
- Clever all-wheel-drive that switches to rear-wheel-drive when cruising to save battery and extend range
Experts say these motors could be as big a game-changer for EVs as fuel injection was for petrol cars back in the day.
What’s Next?
Mercedes says the production version of the AMG GT XX will arrive in 2026, with an SUV using the same tech following in 2027 to rival Porsche’s upcoming electric Cayenne. No word yet on pricing, but don’t expect it to be cheap. This is basically an electric hyper-saloon disguised as a family car.
As Mercedes-AMG boss Michael Schiebe put it: “For customers of our future electric models, this means they will get a genuine AMG – no ifs; no buts."
